Dream.jp - Japan - OpenVZ- starting from 3.45 € / month- 1GB RAM / 50GB HDD

Disclaimer:

I am in no way affiliated with Dream.jp but I have been a customer of theirs for around 1 month. This server was benchmarked and reviewed whilst it was not in production. Therefore it should be noted that the below results are of a server currently being not used.

Introduction:

Dream.jp is offering 3 different types of OpenVZ based Virtual Private Servers in Japan (Tokyo?).
The cheapest server "Entry" costs 3.45 € per monthand is offering:
  •     50 GB HDD
  •     1GB RAM
  •     100Mbit
  •     unlimited transfer??
  •     full root
I bought the server "Standard" with 2GB RAM , 100GB HDD.

First of all: If you don't know how to use Google Translate or you are not able to understand Japanese, then I would not recommend this service.

First Start & Support & Communication

You buy the server by their own panel. It was quite hard to input my personal data, because I needed to write a lot in Japanese Letters. You will get the login information immediately (in Japanese), but at least you can read the IP and the root password, lol. I don't remember which distributions they offer, I guess all standard. They have a Server Manager, but you can only reboot the system etc. I never figured out how to reinstall the system.

I contacted the support once, but they don't understand english (or don't want). That's quite bad.

The Network
The network port is a 100Mbit line. As you can expect the speed to Europe and USA is bad. It took forever to run the speedtest script. Looks like the speed outside of Japan is max. 10Mbit.

Within Japan you "can" around 100Mbit, but don't even mention outside.

Conclusion:

The servers of Dream.jp are cheap, but the CPU speed of around 500 MHZ is bad and their network capacity and the peering to outside of Japan is even worse. If you need to host something in Japan for Japanese Users, then it might be ok.
